Writing Websites for SEO
When writing websites for SEO the
structure of the site needs to be determined first.
Website Structure
If your site is going to be more than a
1 or 2 page sales letter then it is very important to consider its structure before starting.
A well organized site will make it easier for your visitors to find what they are looking for & also make it
much easier to optimize for the search engines.
Think of a large
superstore layout, similar items are grouped together in smaller sections.

Naming your Websites Categories &
Pages
I mentioned at the start that I would
be recommending some paid products & we are now to a point where I feel that a product I use is
very useful.
Micro Niche Finder - If you have followed from the "Start Here" page then you already have a list of the most popular search terms (Keywords) for your websites theme &
how often each of the terms are searched, however without buying a subscription to Wordtracker or purchasing Micro Niche Finder you don't know the strength of competition for each of your
keywords.
I recommend Micro Niche Finder over
Wordtracker, or for that matter any other keyword software I have used before. Without going into keyword
research too technically it details exactly how competitive a particular keyword or key phrase is. If you don't
know this information you can easily write a great site that will never see the light of day in the search engines.
(Page 5 in Google is as good as page 50) No Traffic.
Take your time with the research, changing your site structure later is not recommended. Don't worry if your site
name or even your category pages are competitive drill down with your keyword research & find detailed long
tail keywords & phrases that are less competitive & buyer targeted.
I.E.
| Website Title |
Shoes |
Very Competitive |
Not Targeted Buyers |
| Category Title |
Tennis Shoes |
Very Competitive |
Not Targeted Buyers |
| Sub Category |
Adidas Tennis Shoes |
Competitive |
Potential Buyers |
| Product Page |
Adidas xxx.234.xxx |
Much Less Competition |
Buyers |
Note: Long tail Keywords /
Phrases are generally Buyers terms if you were looking to buy some "Red Adidas Sweat Pants" that is exactly what
you would search for, so these are the terms you should target.
Writing Websites for SEO
For the sake of not drawing this part out I
will assume you have a list of key words & phrases that have good search volume & minimal competition that
you intend to target with your site.
Depending on your web site building software you will have several options for Search
Engine Optimization, whatever software you are using you will have the option of entering...
Meta Data - Information in the pages "Head" tags is not visible on the page without viewing the source
code.
Page Title - This should be your
primary keyword for the page - This is visible in the browsers title bar top left
corner.
Description - Use your primary
keyword in your pages description (as close to the start of the description as possible)
Keywords or Tags - Primary keyword,
site keyword, category keyword plus any associated supporting words. (make sure you use them in the pages
text)
Writing your Pages for SEO
Most Important - Use your pages
main keyword in your header tags and in an image alt tag.
Linking for Seo - It is also good practice to link to your
page using your main keyword as the href tag, i.e. Web
Hosting - from a text link on another page & any offsite links.
Don't flood your web page with your keyword, use your
keyword but also use associated keywords.
Search top ranked competitors sites for their Keyword
Density, what works for them will work for you too. Keyword Density
Tool
Once you have a similar keyword density to the top ranked sites
use associated keywords to boost the pages relavance. Associated
Keyword Tool
Your pages should be a minimum of 500 words long.
IMPORTANT Don't forget you
are writing websites for visitors first & the search engines second. If your
readers don't like your site they will leave. If you keep your pages informative
& full of original content, your readers & the search engines will rank your site highly.
